The mission of Arkansas EPSCoR Program is to enhance research funding at the national level by scientists and groups in Arkansas and to encourage the development of initiatives supportive of this mission. Arkansas EPSCoR through the years has worked collaboratively with other state groups and organizations that focus on fostering economic growth in Arkansas through the essential building blocks of the knowledge-based economy (knowledge creation through research and development, intellectual property development, commercialization of new technologies, growth of entrepreneurial knowledge-based firms, knowledge workforce and evolution of clusters of such firms) to help create an environment supporting entrepreneurship and continuous innovation. NSF EPSCoR SympoNSF EPSCoR Wireless Nano-Bio-Info-Tech Sensor Symposium

NSF EPSCoR Wireless Nano-bio-info-tech Sensor Systems Center proposes to conduct a one day Symposium at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute on Petit Jean Mountain on August 22, 2008. The symposium will focus on newly developed technologies and applications of the nano-bio-infotechnologies based sensors and systems in engineering and medicine. Along with the research on sensors using nanostructures, sensor networking technology enables us to imagine a future where billions of people regularly access applications in global network as their daily routine. The technologies based on nanosensors and nanoelectronics devices with wireless communication capabilities will generate significant impact in broad range of applications in human healthcare, national security and environmental monitoring. Organic (plastic) electronics provide low-cost environmental-friendly devices and material technologies that are built on flexible and conformal substrates.

EPSCoR P3 Center Training Conference

August 20-22, 2008
Winthrop Rockefeller Institute, Petit Jean
Registration Required by July 25

The P3 Center Training Conference will be held at Winthrop Rockefeller Center, Petit Jean Mountain, August 20-22. The training will include demonstration and hands-on experimentation of key areas of the P3 Center including but not limited to:

Transient expression systems in tobacco.
Arabidopsis as an experimental tool including: transformation, genomic resources and database access and manipulation (will need your laptop).
Photosynthesis and light reactions in situ.
Micorarrays.

In addition, we are planning for symposium speaker(s) to provide additional training on varied techniques and background research relevant to the research focal area, poster sessions to broaden understanding of the varied research themes on each others campuses, grant writing workshops to strengthen writing skills, and multiple opportunities for P3 faculty, students and post docs to interact and brainstorm.

Deadline to register is Friday, July 25, 2008. Registration fees are not applicable.

ASTA Welcomes New Intern

Tatum Branaman is the EPSCoR Communications Intern. She graduated with a degree in biology and a minor in history from the University of Central Arkansas in August, 2007. She is currently a graduate student in biology at UCA. Once her master's degree is completed, she plans to become involved in a conservation project in South America through the Peace Corps.

Kyle McClinton has joined the Arkansas Science and Technology Authority as the new STEM Intern. A resident of Conway, Arkansas, Kyle is seeking a degree in English while attending the University of Central Arkansas as a senior. His academic endeavors also include a minor in Spanish and elective emphases in Japanese and Mandarin Chinese

Coalition Takes Steps To Improve Education For A Statewide Economic Boost

The Arkansas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Coalition met Monday, January 26 th , to elect new officers for 2008. The new Chair of the STEM Coalition will be Greg Nabholz of Conway . Nabholz is Vice President of Nabholz Properties. Assisting Nabholz as vice-chair will be Dr. Michael Gealt, Dean of the College of Mathematics and Science, University of Arkansas at Little Rock . Dr. Gail McClure , Arkansas Science & Technology Authority, and Dr. Suzanne Mitchell, Arkansas State University , will serve as secretary and treasurer, respectively.

The STEM Coalition strives to raise awareness of STEM education issues and continues to gain recognition throughout the state. Over the past several years, the STEM Coalition has made a number of advances toward their overall goal of improving science and technology education in the state, which ultimately influences Arkansas ' economy. One of their most important and influential events this past year was hosting the statewide meeting with the National Academies called "Rising Above the Gathering Storm." The event was attended by almost 400 leaders from around the state and resulted in positive feedback. They also supported the Accelerate Arkansas agenda issues that influence STEM education and legislation that provide salary continuation for science specialist positions at the special session of the legislature in the spring of 2006. T he Task Force for Integrating Technology into Public School Education (a subcommittee of the STEM Coalition) has improved student achievement by developing a public school curriculum that integrates technology into the educational process and has raised over $130,000 for this effort.

SBIR Workshop - From Eureka to Commerce

LOCATION: Arkansas Biosciences Institute Building on Arkansas State University Campus

This session will describe how small businesses can use the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to fund technical research and product prototyping. It will introduce participants to issues that affect the ability to convert research results into innovations that produce business success. The SBIR program offers more than $2 billion annually to help small businesses explore their concepts for technical and scientific innovations. Come learn how to go from lab to sales.
